Phone addiction: Toggle grayscale mode on your iPhone – but fast!

Many struggle with phone addiction these days. I’m not falling short on that either. One hack to solve this, is to put your screen in grayscale mode. The black and white graphics are less tasty for your brain, and prolonged usage of, say, instagram is not as compelling any more.

The phone configuration you find a lot (e.g.: here) has a downside: It takes way too long to switch its off and on again. But that is important, e.g. if you want edit photos. Luckily, there is also a faster way. That is, you can toggle grayscale/color by pressing the home button tree times in quick succession. Just follow these steps to set it up:

  • Go to “Settings” (deutsch “Einstellungen”)
  • Navigate to “Accessibility” (deutsch “Bedienungshilfen”)
  • Look for “Shortcuts” (deutsch “Kurzbefehle”)
  • Click at the checkbox in front of “Color Filters” (deutsch “Farbfilter”)

Is this possible with the new iPhone SE or iPhone 11?

  2. Yes, that way it works also on your mentioned iOS devices as they are all running the current iOS version.
    Greets!

  3. Had no idea about this. Such a good tip, thanks! Already activated and hopefully, it will help me reduce my screen time :)
